Why do I paint the flower pink? held at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2020 is the first large-scale exhibition of Charles Chau’s Fafa series. It showcases a body of work Charles created in 2017-2020, comprising colour works on mostly large-size canvases.
Adding tones, layers and textures onto the canvases is itself an evolving, interactive and reflective process. It is patient, it is kind; it is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.
For the artist, these tones, layers and textures are marks of days, weeks, and on occasions, months and even years of continuous dialogue with the world around him.

表現主義アーティストの死
このビデオで、チャールズは自らの創造的な発想、プロセス、それが及ぼす結果について語っている。チャールズが言うところの「表現主義アーティストの死」は、鑑賞者が新たな意味を与えることによって、初めて新たな生を迎える。このような新たな価値観の真実性や正当性は、得てして複数の意味を持ち、見る人それぞれによって異なり、個人に内在する主観的な偏好や状況の変化によって、しばしば様々な形になる。

チャールズは、「花」というモチーフが、地球上ではありふれた存在で、弱く、儚く、官能的であり、人間という理性的な動物にとっての装飾にはなり得るが、主題にはなり得ない、ということを発見した。彼は、花を浄化して超越的な存在に昇華するのではなく、それどころか、「花」だけでは物足りないと感じ、《花々》と重ね合わせて 「ハナバナ」と呼び、人間を酩酊の世界に完全に沈め、巻き付き、絡み合い、衝突させ、人間本来の潜在力を発揮させ、ディオニソス的「陶酔」をアポロ的「夢」に昇華させたいと感じている。驚くべきことに、神秘主義とミニマリズムが一体化してしまったのだ。
