PURPLE moon — First Major Solo of Artist Charles Chau in Los Angeles, CA, USA
AT Gallery is pleased to present, PURPLE moon, an exhibition featuring a series of abstract artworks by Canadian Chinese artist Charles Chau (b1963). Curated by Allison Thompson, of AT Gallery, this exhibition marks a significant extension of Chau’s acclaimed Fafa series, unveiling 40 new masterpieces of his latest Fafa 4 alongside representative works from the artist’s Fafa 123 series. The Fafa series has garnered international attention, with recent exhibitions — When do you last kiss the clouds? (Fafa 3, Tokyo, 2023), Fafa Interlude: Last Night (Fafa 2, Vancouver 2022), and Why do I paint the flower pink? (Fafa 1, Hong Kong, 2020).
The exhibition opens November 22nd, 2024, and runs until November 24th, 2024, at 1452 E 6th Street, in the Los Angeles Downtown Arts District, Friday to Sunday. All works will be available for purchase.
As Charles Chau states: “I started Fafa in search of pureness and joy of a 5-year-old playing with colours on canvases. Obviously, the little ones have grown a bit since my first exhibition of the Fafa. So, presented here in this exhibition is a faithful record of what the child has grown up to ‘see’ — the unpredictability of ‘nature’ that also becomes an important part of the ‘nurture’ of any childhood development.”
PURPLE moon proudly presents an exquisite collection of 40 large-scale paintings from Hong Kong born artist Charles Chau's celebrated Fafa series — with majority of them being Fafa 4 works unveiled to the public for the very first time in Los Angeles. These paintings are the artists impressions of nature and the world, changing through time, sharply articulated with his versatile vocabularies of colours.
Allison Thompson, curator of the show, adds:
“PURPLE Moon, Charles’s fourth exhibition in the Fafa series, marks a thrilling milestone as my gallery's inaugural showcase in Los Angeles following our expansion from Vancouver. From the very inception of the Fafa series, we have witnessed a remarkable evolution in Charles’s artistry and style. In this exhibition, he delves into a more romantic color palette, skillfully experimenting with enchanting shades of purple and pink. The works invite viewers to reflect on the rare phenomenon of the purple moon, symbolizing transformation and wonder. Prepare to be captivated by the emotional depth and vibrant energy that each artwork brings to life!”

To commemorate the artist's last 15-years of his art journey, we are also thrilled to announce the launch of a 384-page book titled Touch, Smell, Hear & Feel My Works: An Anthology of Artworks by Charles Chau. This book, featuring a rich collection of text, images, and essays, will be unveiled at Hennessy + Ingalls on Saturday, November 16, 2024, alongside a discussion between the artist:publisher and curator of PURPLE moon, Allison Thompson.

Tetsuji Shibayama in Japan and Allison Thompson in Los Angeles enter into representation-partnership agreements with Hong Kong born Canadian artist Charles Chau
Effective from today, Tetsuji Shibayama will act as manager-representative in the Japan market for the Hong Kong born Canadian artist Charles Chau, working in tandem with Allison Thompson of AT Art & Interiors, Charles’s inaugural manager-representative in Vancouver who will expand her role to cover the North America market, an expansion that coincides with her move from Vancouver to Los Angeles.
In marking the agreement, Allison Thompson says, “I am thrilled to have the support of Tetsuji in Japan. Charles’s move to Tokyo and new partnership with Tetsuji echoes my artistic vision of ‘East Meets West’, the title of the exhibition I staged ten years ago on establishing my art consultancy. I look forward to working together to bring Charles’s work to greater public attention in North America and Japan.”
Announcing the new partnership, Tetsuji Shibayama, former head of Sotheby's Japan for over 10 years who previously worked in the Rockefeller Family Office in New York for several years, says: "In over three decades of my professional art management and investment, as well as involvement in art education, I have found Charles to be of a rare breed: one of 'pure' intent. I am delighted to be part of his growing global team.”
In celebrating the new agreement, Charles Chau says, “I feel privileged and honoured to be working with this amazing world-class team to represent and promote my work on both sides of the ocean. The foundation of this new partnership is our strong commitment and conviction that art should be seen and shared.”

About Tetsuji Shibayama and ZeZe
Tetsuji Shibayama has over three decades of experience in international art management and investments as well as cross-cultural exchanges. An MBA from Harvard Business School, Shibayama first worked for several years in the Rockefeller family office in New York before returning to Japan to become Head of Sotheby’s Japan where he remained for over 10 years. Thereafter, he started his own consultancy AG Holdings, focusing on planning and managing corporate and private art collections, including art support programmes in his native Japan. More recently, he has dedicated himself to the education and promotion of young Japanese artists and art business entrepreneurs locally and abroad, with various university programmes and auction events. He is one of the most experienced auctioneers with bilingual capability.
Also a Professor of Tea of the Enshu School, Shibayama has been practising Tea Ceremonies as a Tea Master for over 15 years where he is known by his ‘Tea Master’ name Sotetsu Shibayama. The opportunity to purchase a legendary brand comes rarely. In 2021, the opportunity arose for Shibayama to acquire the 400-year-old ZeZe ceramics brand located 15 km east of Kyoto. ZeZe was founded in the early 17th century as one of the few appointed ceramic makers to the Tokugawa Shogunate and their families with its wares used in Tea Ceremonies, hospitality occasions and Rituals for the Shoguns and their guests including members of Royal families and Samurai Lords. In the three years since acquiring ZeZe, Shibayama has taken time to respectfully consider the heritage and plan the future. His vision for ZeZe is to elevate the functionalities of its traditional Tea Ceremony ‘wares’ to become ‘objects d’art’ in the daily lives of discerning collectors and the aesthetic-conscious.
