WHITE Series  Beijing, 2014

This is an evolution of ‘public’ art for artist Charles Chau and his partner Rainbow. Here they are at The Opposite House, Beijing where the artist couple want to draw the viewers ever more closely and deeply into an open mountain dreamscape by way of a sculptural form. This evolution — an extension of Charles’s earlier phenomenological landscapes as expressed in graphite drawings — now emerges in a surreal form of light and translucence of pure whiteness. 

The mega-size sculpture works (9m L x 3.65m W x 3.6m H) emerge from a base of angles and forms as, with augmenting rhythm, each mountain emerges, rising like a phoenix, the more tangible ‘thereness’ of the installation allowing the grandeur of the mountains to emerge as if set there by nature. 

Here, beauty is to be found again, both in the part and in the whole.
